Poetry, Print Culture, and the Making of the 'Lake District'

Conférence de Julia Carlson, associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Cincinnati.

Her first book, Romantic Marks and Measures: Wordsworth's Poetry in Fields of Print, is forthcoming from the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2014. Here she argues that the poetry Wordsworth aligned with speech and nature materialized in the context of print—within a culture actively engaged in making apparent the morphologies of the English language and landscape on paper. She is currently beginning a second monograph on digital “interactivity” before touch screens and hyperlinks: Reading with the Hands: Impression and Inscription in Romantic-Era Britain investigates a range of new print discourses, print methods, and reading practices that incorporated readers within, and marginalized others from, the national sphere of print.
